Tina drew the new path on the hill, then went on. ‘And what’s so cool about that is that the next time your worries get so big that you’re at the top of the mountain, you’re going to know that you don’t have to go down the path that leads to Panic Attack Land. You might still take that path from time to time; after all, it’s the path you’re used to, and the rut is pretty deep. But snow is always falling, and the less you use the path to Panic Attack Land, the more it will get covered up by new snow. And the more you go down the other path, the more traveled it is and easy to follow in the future. This new path will become the one you’ll be used to, and where your sled will be waiting, and you’ll end up having a great day like today.’
Tina brought the hopeful neuroplasticity message home by reminding Alanah about the power of her mind and body to change her actual brain. She explained that the paths on the snowy hill are like connections in our brain. They can become smaller and weaker, or bigger and stronger, depending on how much attention we give them and how much we use them. And this is just one more way we can take control of how we feel and how we respond to what happens to us.
That’s the power of mindsight tools. We learn to monitor and then modify our inner experience. The reason we’re such believers in mindsight tools is that they allow kids to understand and harness the power of their minds to change the way they view and respond to their circumstances. They allow them to expand their green zones. Mindsight tools allow kids like Alanah to feel anxiety and worry and still stay in the green zone instead of going to, for instance, a red panic attack. Just as Alanah began to comprehend that she didn’t have to remain helpless in the face of her circumstances and fears, we want to help all kids develop a mindset that begins with the assumption that they are masters of their fate, and that even though life is hard sometimes and they don’t always get what they want, they can take charge and make decisions about how they respond and who they want to be. That’s resilience.
Yes Brain Kids: Teach Your Kids About Resilience
In Chapter 2’s ‘Yes Brain Kids’ section, we introduced children to the concept of the green zone and discussed what it looks like when we leave the green zone and move into the red or blue zone. In this chapter’s ‘Yes Brain Kids,’ we help you promote resilience in your kids by explicitly talking with them about dealing with challenges. The central lesson focuses on helping kids face tough situations and calm themselves down, so they don’t become helpless in the face of their circumstances or emotions. You can let them know, in other words,
